Cooking Equipment

Find the right cooking equipment

There are many items of cooking equipment available to fill a kitchen regardless of the cook's specialty. Perhaps the cooking utensils need to be geared toward Chinese cooking equipment, or maybe you're looking for something on a much larger scale, like commercial cooking equipment. There are several utensils and appliances available for those looking to be mobile with their cooking, such as those looking for camping cooking equipment. Regardless of specialty, much of the equipment is similar, but differences should be researched.

Cooking Equipment 101

Every kitchen should be stocked with the basics. But what are the basics? Just like a spice rack filled with herbs and spices ready to be used at a moment's notice, a fully stocked kitchen is a cook's dream. Utensils, pots, pans and more are all at arm's reach and ready to be put to use.

Depending on the level of inventory necessary or desired, one may pick and choose from the cooking utensils list below for a well-stocked kitchen:

  • 8" or 10" chef's knife
  • Paring knife
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Serrated knife
  • Bread knife
  • Ladles of different sizes
  • Spatulas
  • Slotted spoons
  • Wooden spoons of varying sizes
  • Pots – one large, one medium and one small
  • Nonstick frying pans of varying sizes
  • Ovenproof baking dishes
  • Set of microwave bowls
  • Roasting pan

These basics will get any cook headed in the right direction. When it comes to Chinese cooking equipment, some of these essentials are also needed:

  • Wok – perhaps more than one if the family is large or the wok is used often

  • Chinese cleaver
  • Steamer
  • Sizzling platter
  • Wire strainer

Specialty Cooking Gear

For those wanting to take cooking to an extra-stellar place, there are appliances and tools available to make their dreams a reality. What is specialty cooking gear? Much like industrial cooking equipment, specialty cooking involves machinery developed for larger scale production, as well as fancier and more customized cooking results. Below is a list of some of the items available that may also be used for commercial cooking equipment:

  • Cappuccino maker
  • Coffee grinders
  • Pasta machines
  • Gelato machines
  • Granita machines (think slushies)
  • Panini makers
  • Sausage makers

Still more specialty cooking equipment is needed for those who camp often. Camping cooking equipment must take into account separate heat sources (as opposed to home-based ovens) as well as storage for easily-spoiled meats and dairy products. Some of these items may be rented, as cost may be an issue for those who don't need these products as often:

  • Charcoal lighter basket
  • Dutch oven
  • Heat safe gloves
  • Portable fryer
  • Tripod for cooking directly over fire
