Singing is a great hobby; you can practice wherever you go since your voice is always with you. You can sing in the shower, in the car on the way to work or any place you have some privacy. Singing can often make you feel better, and it can make it easier to get through mundane tasks like house or yard work.
If you want to get serious about singing, you need to take precautions for a quality performance. When you sing, your entire body is the instrument, so take good care of yourself by eating nutritious food, getting plenty of rest and avoiding alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine before a performance. Avoid dairy foods as well; these can increase the production of mucous membranes in the mouth and throat, making it more difficult to sing effectively. Finally, drink lots of water!
To sing well requires good posture, a deep breath and lots of confidence. Don't think you can rely on a microphone to be heard. You need to open your mouth and project well – being timid will constrict your vocal cords and minimize your projection or possibly knock you off key. Practice makes perfect; the more you do it, the better you'll get. Sing along to your favorite songs and record the performance. It's often hard to distinguish whether you're in key while you're singing along to music; however, the recording never lies.
If you can convincingly pass this test and regularly get compliments from others (not necessarily family members), it may be a good sign that you're ready to evolve your voice. You can sign up for singing lessons, sing at church and frequent karaoke nights to refine your skills further and get practice singing in front of others.
If you want to take your singing to the next level, you may wish to enter a singing contest. These events tend to happen in front of large groups of people and the stakes are higher; often there are prizes for the top three finishers. Grand prizes often involve cash, recording time or both along with the opportunity to compete at a regional or state level. To participate in a singing contest you need to fill out an entry form, pay an entry fee and successfully pass one or more singing auditions. The more prestigious the event, the more rigorous the audition process will be.
While the odds of becoming a celebrity singer are stacked against you, there are plenty of unknown singers all over the world that earn a full-time income from singing. Whether you sing on jingles, on cruise ships, with a band or even for a singing telegram company – you can be paid to sing. If singing is your dream, you have the talent, you are willing to work hard and you are open to all possibilities, you can turn your hobby into a career.
